Concrete Material for Interior Applications

without comments

Concrete is an extraordinary material that is practical, expressive and aesthetic all at once. From a primal and formless slurry, you can transform into virtually any shape, which is a solid mass. The possibilities for creative expression are endless. You can paint, polish, stamp, or stain. You can embed meaningful objects within it.

Concrete has substance and mass, durability and warmth. It feels underground, and are at home in both traditional and modern institutions. It is assumed that irrevocably shapes our daily lives-bridges, highways, floors, walls touch … even countertops. Concrete is also surprisingly tactile. Cast and shaped, it can feel like stone rounded by the sea. Texture and color can repeat the patina of worn tiles.

It first occurred to me to come up with a concrete in 1985 when a friend and I were hired to design and professor at the house in the hills of Berkeley renovation. He gave us a modest budget, and said: “This is all I can afford to spend, do what you want.” Armed with this rare creative license (and a lot of youthful abundance) we tried to be as innovative as possible.

This invitation to fantasize, play and discovery inevitably led me to experiment in my own kitchen, where concrete and I began what is now almost ten years our two dances. My first kitchen table was a piece with 11 cubic meters of concrete. He weighed nearly 1,500 pounds and has 10 people and two engine hoists to run it after it had healed. We have hardly been successful, but the piece came out beautifully and it is still well used today.

Because of its adaptability, concrete is welcome in all areas of the house, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, but also in fireplaces, patios, garden paths or water features. Concrete can also be used as a floor material with enormous creative advantages whether seeded, colored, stamped, broomed or finished diamonds. It may be a single artist or play the supporting role of tiles, mosaics, decorative aggregates, stone, wood or metal. It is cheap, durable, fireproof, impervious to decay, and also very effective for passive solar energy to get the right application.

With vertical treatments, concrete gives us the opportunity to share the feeling of monolithic wall feel of the drug to regain the protection. The walls are also a good place to explore the form. A wall is not flat or straight, but curves and waves. It can be structured as a rough stone or smooth as glass.

Staining A Concrete Floor

Acid staining can transform a concrete floor look so expensive stone flooring. Not only is it a fraction of the price, but for people allergic to carpeting materials it is a godsend. Another program is in big houses with floor heating. Radiation is most efficient when insulating floor coverings like tile or carpet are minimized.

The process of staining a concrete floor, although not overly complicated, can be difficult to get the desired results out. Most people are probably better off hiring a professional contractor. It’s a risky project for do-it-yourself.

If you are not familiar with the concrete stain is not paint or coating. It is a chemical reaction in cement-based materials. Typically a water-based solution of hydrochloric acid and inorganic salts reacts with minerals and chalk stain in the concrete aggregate, and the outcome of the reaction is color. It works on new or old concrete, and is fairly durable if you maintain it with sealer or wax, because it will not color or chip. It can also be used for both indoor and outdoor floors. Pedestrian Bridges, bathrooms, entrances, driveways, living rooms and patios are all fair game.

When it is finished, stained concrete looks a bit like marble, but more varied and less uniform. The concrete is usually brown earth tones, with hints of red and green. It is possible to create your own tint stain by mixing colors, or to apply different rates. When you stain a concrete floor, but do not expect the stain or just a single beep. Plan your room layout and colors of these, because you are getting odd reactions from different areas of concrete, and even an experienced pro will be hard pressed to predict what the outcome will be.

Surface prep for acid staining concrete depends on what the condition of your plate is poured in. New concrete should only be allowed time to heal in three weeks after pouring a while, rinse and scrub. Older concrete is a different story. Thorough cleaning is necessary because all dirt, grease, paint, sealer or curing agent will keep the stain to penetrate and react correctly. Have a small test area to check whether it is ready.

Newer poured concrete requires less stain than older floors, but generally one liter of water, add one liter of the stain will be approximately 400 square feet to cover. Apply stain with a non-metallic brush or broom, working in the cooler morning or evening hours, instead of in the heat of the day. Be careful to protect yourself against leaks, drips and fumes from the acid stain and follow the steps from the manufacturer.

After application, you must clean up by sweeping any remaining stains and residue with a broom. If the floor is dry, it’s a good idea to apply a sealer agent, and so it was.

If you’re in the market for natural stone floors, a new look to your basement or patio, or just looking for new remodeling ideas, colored concrete is something you should look.

Enhance your home with wood floors can be a daunting task, I know I’m just in my own hardwood floor. When I chose to finish my floors, I was overwhelmed with the idea of introducing the floor on my own. But in the real sense of DIY, I have and here is what I did, so do not be lame the way I was.

First, I had the tone of wooden I wanted for my floors to choose. There is also the width of each shelf, a shelf wood grain and border – how the wood plank to the next shelf.

Now all these factors combined to either courtly or casual space. The wider the plank, it is more informal feel and the more tightly the wood separated from the more area will look elegant. Facets add the impression of elegance in the elegant surroundings.

Once you’ve decided that you want to highlight the type of wood plank for your floors. Oak and pine are the two most common types of wood flooring. You can not go wrong with either. For something unusual can try cherry hardwood floors. The gloss deepens over time and use in a deep patina, in the right house this result would be fantastic. Another popular type of bamboo flooring. Bamboo is very sturdy and has a compressed grain which appears very symmetrical and straight.

Wood flooring by hand, directly into your house and let it sit and climatizing. This is crucial, so the wood to adjust fluid levels in your home means a longer lasting installation. While this happens, bring a kind of water guard on the floor, asphalt felt worked perfectly for me. Now you are ready to begin installation.

Make sure that a half inch between your boards and walls, it is for growth and will be buried on your shelf. I have nearly always indicated a few planks Before nails. Start with your broadest and longest planks, you will deepen this. Before nailing an adjacent row to row rap with a rubber hammer, it is a good and tight with the adjacent row or you will break into your wood plank floor. Another expert guideline is to keep the ends of adjacent rows at least six inches apart.

If you are a flooring mallet be careful. The hammer will undoubtedly assist you in your floor quicker but if you’re not careful you can easily break up or even crush the wooden planks. If you do that you need the nails out and junk Board dick. Also keep an eye on what you wear on your feet. I had drag marks on my new wooden floor before I even finished installing it because I had work boots on.

When you complete a row, you need a crowbar to use the rows close together. Once nailed, you’re done! Brand new hardwood flooring for you to love and value of your household to increase. Better Air Quality With Suitable Wood Floors

without comments

Allergy season is in full swing and an estimated 35 million Americans suffer from health problems as a result of allergens. In fact, statistics from the Allergy Consumer Review show that allergens account for 10 million missed workdays each year.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality is one of America’s top environmental issues, with pollutants such as chemicals, mold, dust, dander and pollen contributing to various ailments.

To help cut down on allergens caused by poor indoor air quality, many experts suggest adding wood flooring to a new or existing home. Wood floors contribute to better air quality because they don’t collect the dust and dirt that are often embedded in carpet. As an added benefit, a new wood floor can last three to six times longer than carpeting.

Further, carpet can hide the harmful bacteria, mold spores and pet dander that researchers say could be responsible for the increase in asthma cases in the U.S.

“Over the years, we’ve seen a number of allergy and asthma cases attributed to poor air quality in people’s homes,” said Dr. Neil Schachter, professor of pulmonary medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

A recent EPA study also found that hardwood floors greatly reduce the accumulation of toxins. To help improve indoor air quality, Schachter offers these simple tips from his book, “Life and Breath.”

  • Check your air conditioner. Check the ducts in your central air-conditioning unit once a month to remove extra water that may have accumulated.
  • Inspect your walls. Wallpaper is a potent food for dust mites and mold, both of which can grow behind the wallpaper. Use flat, washable paint instead.
  • Avoid carpet in the bedroom. It is estimated that the average bed contains 10,000 dust mites, which usually burrow deep into carpets.

“Wood floors are not only beautiful, they’re also renewable and extremely durable,” said Kelly McCloskey, president and chief executive officer of the Wood Promotion Network. “And by installing wood floors in their homes, consumers send a signal to the industry to plant more trees, resulting in more forestland.”
